University of Manila gets top spot

UM's Alvin Viernes scored 34 points

The defending champion University of Manila Hawks avenged their opening day loss to the STI College Olympians by scoring a convincing 64 – 50 win.  It was the 13th consecutive winfor the Hawks which gave them the top seed in the final four and will meet the fourth seeded Informatics International College while the second seeded Olympians will meet the dangerous Centro Escolar University Scorpions in the final four.   In the Junior s division, the University of Manila Hawklets likewise secured the top spot by beating the defending Champion Our Lady of Fatima University  83 – 75. The topseeded Hawklets will meet the St. Clare Baby Saints which lost to the AMACU Junior Titans 83 – 74. The win by the Junior Titans automatically gave them the third spot in the final four and will meet the Junior Phoenix with the latter carrying a twice to beat advantage. The win by the Junior Titans shut the door for the Centro Escolar University Junior Scorpions.

STI's Jerald Bautista eludes UM's Eugene Torres

The STI College Olympians had no answer to 2009 rookie of the year Alvin Jeff Viernes who sank a three pointer in the opening minutes of the game and had a field day against all defenders given him. Viernes would topscore for the Hawks as he scattered 34 points to atone for the off nignt of fellow Hawk and 2010 MVP Eugene Torres who scored a measly 5 points.  The Hawks opened the game with a 12 -2 lead and sustained that lead all through out the game as the Olympians played catch up. The lead ballooned to 21 points 52 -31 in the third quarter as Viernes would quell all rallies by the Olympians as he singlehandedly gave the hawks the top spot.

UM's Eugene Torres scores on a jumper

John Lenyer Santos led the assault for the Hawklets as he had a double – double game as he scored 17pts and pulled down 12 rebounds. His supporting crew also scored in double figures as  Yves Maveric Nicolas got 13pts, Rodolfo Marticio added 12pts, Christian Mateo shot 11pts and Ryanosuke Oka got 10pts in what was billed as a preview to the Juniors Championship as both teams battled on equal ground until the last five minutes of the ball game. Jordan Gaddy led the Junior Phoenix  with 18pts followed by Bernabe Teodoro who torched the nets with 14pts, Dave Del Rosario added 12pts while  John paul Pineda had 11pts for the second placed Antipolo based squad.

STI's Maclean Sabellina scores

The Hawk's Rivera drives to the basket

There is a rivalry brewing in the NAASCU as the 11th season nears its final stages and it involves the two front runners this season. The University of Manila Hawks and the STI College Olympians both won three straight games which brought them closer to getting the first two spots and twice to beat advantage in the final four. The defending champion Hawks beat the AMACU Titans, Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix and CEU Scorpions succesively to lead all teams with an 11 – 1 win loss slate. Their win against the Scorpions secured them of the first twice to beat advantage slot.  The Olympians on the other hand exacted revenge on the Fatima Phoenix and then beat the CEU Scorpions and AMACU Titans to secure the second spot at 10 -2.  Technically speaking, the Informatics Icons can still catch up on the Olympians at the 8 - 4 Icons can tie the Olympians if they win their last two games while the Olympians lose theirs.  The Icons will be meeting the Hawks and the Olympians and a loss to any of these teams will give the Olympians the twice to beat edge. If in case the Hawks and Olympians bothe make it to the finals then it will be the fouth time that both teams will be meeting in the finals.

The Olympian's Bautista
 on the fastbreak

The Our Lady of Fatima Univeristy Phoenix and AMACU Titans are now both out of the running as the Informatics Icons and Centro Escolar University Scorpions have completed the final four cast with the few remaining games still going to determine the seedings of the teams.  The Scorpions started the quarterfinals tied for second with the Olympians and Icons but lost succesively to the Olympians and Hawks after barely beating the Scorpions.  The Icons on the other hand lost two straight, against the Scorpions and the Titans but bounced back to beat the Phoenix to put them back into contention.  If the Icons tie the Olympians they take 2nd place and if the Scorpions tie the Olympians they take third.
Minus their two stars,
the Icons lost to the Titans

In the Juniors Division, the University of Manila Hawklets and defedning Champion Our Lady of Fatima Phoenix have bothr secured the twice to beat advantage. The Hawks have 10 wins as against a lone loss while closely following them are the defedning champion Junior Phoenix with 9 wins and two losses.  The third running St. Clare Baby Saints can still catch up on the Junior Phoenix but the Antipolo based Fatima squad hold a higher quotient.  The CEU Junior Scorpions and AMACU Junior Titans will most probably fight for the last remaining slot as the first team eliminated in the quarterfinals is the STI College Junior Olympians.

The Phoenix rises

Stay tuned for more exciting games as the 11th National Athletic Association of Schools Colleges and Universities goes through its final stages. All the remaining games of the 11th NAASCU will be played at the Makati Coliseum.

Hawks, Olympians, Scorpions beat foes

Two free throws by Alvin Viernes
won them the game

The University of Manila Hawks, the STI College Olympians and the Centro Escolar University Scorpions beat their respectively rivals at the start of the second round of action of the 11th National Athletic Association of Schools Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) at the Makati Coliseum.  Already out of the running are the St. Clare College Saints, the New Era University Hunters, the City University of Pasay Eagles and newcomer Trace College of Los Baños as the quarterfinal stage of the NAASCU goes underway. After this round, the top four teams will figure in a final four format.
Former UAAP Junior campaigners
Storm Riva (UST) of STI College and
Dexter Rosales (FEU) of OLFU

The Hawks needed their big guns to shine as Alvin Jeff Viernes scored 18 points including the insurance free throws at the end of the game to stave off the gallant stand of the upset seeking AMA Computer University Titans 71 – 68.  The Titans got big games from the troika of Ibarra, Mangalindan and Villena who combined for 36 markers but still fell short of upsetting the defending champions.  Hawk center Jay-ar Manuel and last year’s MVP Eugene Torres ably supported Viernes by scoring 17 and 16 points respectively as the Hawks romp to their ninth straight win.

Ivan Moreno topscored
 for the Olympians

The Olympians on the other hand started hot by taking a 5 -0 lead, relinquished it at 10 -9, fell behind 16 -11, recovered to tie the count at the half at 32- all and needed an amazing run in the third quarter to avenge their loss to the Our Lady of Fatima Phoenix by way of a masterful 74 -52 win.  The big men of the Olympians showed the way for the Taguig based squad as Ivan Moreno scored 14 points while D-League veterans Maclean Sabellina, Cedric Ablaza and Jerald Bautista each scored 10, 9 and 9 points respectively. The only bright spot for the Phoenix was Paul Alba who delivered the goods for the Phoenix by scoring 18  points but didn’t get much help from his team mates as no one besides him scored in double figures.

CEU's Leymund Babad dives for the ball

The game of the day belonged to the Centro Escolar University Scorpions and Informatics Icons game which was a classic battle to gain for a tie of 2nd place.  At the start of the quarterfinals the Olympians, Scorpions and Icons were all tied with 7 wins and 2 losses, now its only the Olympians and Scorpions that’s tied for second as the Scorpions beat the Icons 70 -68.  Both teams felt the pressure of the match as two Icons were thrown out in the first quarter alone.  Informatics lead point guard Erick Acuña was whistled for a disqualifying foul as he got caught punching CEU guard Jay Alquisalas  with still 8:20 left in the first quarter.  Barely five minutes after that the Icons Mark Limpat was also given a disqualifying foul after being caught elbowing the face of CEU’s JP Magbitang.  Both players will be given an immediate one game suspension when the Icons meet the AMACU Titans.  As a result, the Scorpions rode on the heroics of John Orbeta, Leymund Babad and JP Magbitang to score a close win against the Icons.  Game 2 of the resumes on Tuesday with the UM Hawks pitted against the OLFU Phoenix, the STI College Olympians against the CEU Scorpions and the Informatics Icons against the AMACU Titans.

Junior Olympians, Baby Saints, Junior Phoenix beat foes

UM's John Santos skies for the rebound

At the newly refurbished Makati Coliseum, NAASCU fans were treated to superb plays, amazing comebacks and buzzer beating shots which was usually the case for championship games but technically it was just the opening games of the second round of the 11th NAASCU Juniors Basketball tournament.  Erven Silverie of STI College sank a buzzer beating three pointer with no time left to lift the Junior Olympians to a monumental 103 – 102 overtime upset win over the University of Manila Hawklets.  Meanwhile the Our Lady of Fatima Junior Phoenix overcame a sluggish start to overcome the AMACU Junior Titans 72 – 63 while the St. Clare Baby Saints took out the sting of the CEU Junior Scorpions 88 – 72.

Jim Lontoc led
the Junior Olympians

The game of the day was the first game which featured the sixth seeded Junior Olympians against the league leading and undefeated Hawklets which was a see saw battle that saw both teams come back from the dead and in the end game every single second counted as Silverie altered the standings with his three pointer.  The win by the Junior Olympians gave the other teams a sigh of relief because a sweep of the second round would mean an automatic title for the now  8 – 1 Hawklets.  This means that there will be a final four and a knock out championship match.

Teodoro led
the Junior Phoenix

Leading the cause for the Junior Olympians was seldom used forward Jim Patrick Lontoc who played the game of his life as he scattered 28 points with six three pointers. Lontoc proved to be the steady force for the Junior Olympians as he scored 7 overtime points as he lead his team’s comeback when the Hawklets were about to pull away. The troika of Rynosure Oka, Rodolfo Marticio and John Santos carried the fight for the Hawklets as the three netted 22, 21 and 20 points respectively.

AMACU's Garcia scores

The Junior Phoenix on the other needed to jumpstart their bid to jump from third place to second place as Bernabe Teodoro and Jerome Juanico played like Batman and Robin to forge the Antipolo based squad to their seventh win against two losses.  Jefferson  Arceo and Ermindo Disipulo carried the fight for the Junior Titans as the duo scored 13 and 12 points respectively.  The win put the Junior Phoenix a full game ahead of their nearest pursuers - the Junior Scorpions and Baby Saints.  The CEU Junior Scorpions on the other hand lost steam and eventually the game as the fifth seeded Baby saints got the better end of their match up to give a strong message to the rest of the teams that they are also one of the favorites. The Baby Saints got 30 big points from Joy de Mesa while Norman Mercado added 20 markers. The Baby Saints and Junior Scorpions are now tied at 6 wins and three losses apiece while the Junior Titans now have 5 wins and 4 losses while the Junior Olympians have 4 wins and 4 losses.

NAASCU Second Round underway

Hawks goes up agains the Titans

The first round of the 11th National Athletic Association of Schools Colleges and Universities (NAASCU)  ended with the favored teams making the grade and advancing to the second round of action.  Leading the top six teams is defending champion University of Manila Hawks which rung up eight consecutive wins after dropping their opening game against the STI College Olympians.  The Hawks are 8 – 1 and are the top seed going to the second round.   Not too far behind are the three other favored teams that all won 7 times and won two games each  - the STI College Olympians, the CEU Scorpions and the Informatics Icons.   The Olympians showed that they are one of the favorites in the league by beating the defending champs on opening day but unfortunately failed to sustain their momentum by losing to the Icons and succumbing to pressure against the Phoenix in overtime.  Their better quotient against the two other teams gave them the no. 2 seed in the second round.

Olympians Morales on the fastbreak

The CEU Scorpions on the other hand could not get a win against the two teams ahead of them but made a strong stand to beat the Icons and the Phoenix. Those wins gave them a strong hold of the third spot.  The Informatics Icons on the other hand suprised the Olympians and was the last team to remain unbeaten.  Their first loss came at the hands of the Hawks and Scorpions but came up above the other teams trailing them. The two remaining teams in the top six are the Fatima Phoenix and the AMACU Titans.  The Phoenix had their moments after they beat the Olympians but lost to the Hawks, Scorpions and Icons.  The Titans on the other hand round out the top six after winning against the bottom half of the draw. The other teams eliminated are the New Era University Hunters, the St. Clare Saints, the City University of Pasay Eagles and newcomer Trace College. Their only common denominator is that they all lost to the top six teams.

Hawks collar the rebound

In Juniors action, the University of Manila Hawlets remain unbeaten in eight games while the Our Lady of Fatima University Junior Phoenix and CEU Junior Scorpions occupy the second and third positions. The St. Clare Baby Saints and AMACU Junior Titans booked the fourth and fifth spots while the STI Junior Olympians barely made the top six.  In the distaff side, the Centro Escolar Lady Scorpions clinched the Women’s title by sweeping all their games and dislodging the defending champion UM Lady Hawkettes.  The second round for the Juniors resume on September 7. 2011 while the seniors will be starting their second round on September 9, 2011. All games will now be played at the Makati Coliseum.
