OLFU & NEU Woodpushers
Defending Champion New Era University Hunters held their ground as the new kids on the block, the Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix unleashed gave it their all as the two teams were declared Co-Champions in the recently concluded 10th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges & Universities Chess Tournament at the University of Makati. Both schools ended up with 20.5 points as they ended tied after seven grueling rounds which took three days to finish. On the distaff side, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay scored 12.5 Pts to lead the Pasay based girls a huge 2 point lead against the second running Centro Escolar University.
OLFU vs. NEU
Troy Enerio of Our Lady of Fatima University stood tall among all the other woodpushers as he was given the Gold Medal in Board one. His play was instrumental for the Phoenix to tie the Hunters. Another Phoenix was given a gold as Mark Anthoy Co lorded it over the second board. On the other hand it was New Era’s Arnel Berdon and Byron Garcia who took the Gold for the third and fourth boards respectively as these Gold medalists paced the field by scoring at least six points.

Arnel Berdon (B3- NEU) Byron Garcia (B4 -NEU)
The battle came down to the last match up as New Era was upset by the AMACU Titans. What was perceived as a sweep by the Hunters came down to a 2-2 draw that stymied the Hunters quest to become solo champs. This scenario gave the Fatima Phoenix much to celebrate as they literally rose to the top by beating the St. Clare Saints in the penultimate round 3.5 - 0.5, this scenario was enough to give them a tie for the top spot. St. Clare hung tough and still got the third place. In the Women’s division it was PLP all the way as the team of Board 1 Gold medalist Realyn Casano, Board 2 Silver Medalist Daena Rivera and Board 3 Gold medalist Paola Asuncion would surrender only one point at most to all their opponents as they went away with plenty to spare.
